Deciat, Deviet, Veeseem, Seem , Sheest, Piat, Chotere, Tre, Dva, Odin. Counting Down the days until we travel to Ukraine! Analu has been helping Kaitlin and I with basic Ukrainian. Many Thanks. We have a lot of work to do. On June 4th we'll be participating in the Calgary Ukrainian Festival and learning more about the rich culture we'll be visiting at the end of June.
Joey, if there are any creature comforts you'd like us to bring, please let us know (eg - socks, favorite junk food) and thank you for the generous offer to host us in Lutsk!
Kaitlin is looking forward to being at a beautiful lake helping the children swim and I know I will enjoy the contagious energy of tensing and meeting new people of all ages!
That is all for now.
Papah!
I am really happy you are learning some basics...but please know that when you are talking to kids here, they don't understand the concept of "foreigners learning Ukrainian" which means they speak very quickly and assume you understand everything...I have been working with kids for 3 weeks and I can barely understand them, this is after 3 years of Russian and 2 months in Ukraine hahaha but I'm hoping to get it soon...I bought a language book in Lviv and I have been conjugating verbs and learning case endings and most importantly where to place the accent on certain words...it makes a whole world of difference if you stress the wrong "o" in a word. Its getting really hot here and more people are out on the streets at night...on saturday night we were coming back from Lviv at 3:30am, walking to my place we were stopped by some "hopniks" (you will see what i mean when you arrive) it could have gone incredible bad for us but we kept walking while one of them yelled for us to return. I wish you could bring me some Canadian police officers! please bring some canadian flags and patches to give to the YMCA people here, I wish I brought more...but for me, there is nothing I need, maybe a copy of the globe and mail?? hahahah
ReplyDeleteanother thing...very important! try to learn the verbs of motion! they are the most commonly used and the easiest to forget. I still don't know them properly, but I really stress how important they are. if you can learn at least 4 of them "to go" in the present past and future tense and by foot or by vehicle, it will really help :)
